Art Gallery free essay sample

When looking at Psyche Awakened by Cupids Kiss, I am able to see plenty of movement and rhythm. This sculpture shows rhythm through the mans wings as they seem to be high in the air as well as the womens arms as she reaches to wrap her arms around the mans head. There is also rhythm in this sculpture as shown by the wings and the draping pieces of clothes. This is an example of rhythm because it draws your eyes from one part of the sculpture to another through the directions of the wings, arms, and loathes. This sculpture not only displays rhythm and movement, but also unity. Each piece of the sculpture is placed in a certain spot so that they all can build on each other and tie together to form a complete sculpture. There isnt much variation in this sculpture because it is all one color and it isnt a complicated sculpture. There are only two human figures as well as a set of wings and a draping piece of cloth. There is no symmetry in this sculpture because no two sides are the same. However, there is a little bit of gradation. There seems to be a small amount of gradation on the sculpture where some areas are a bit darker than others. It looks like a shadow on the sculpture, which accents different parts of the two humans and the clothing. The texture of this sculpture is different depending on which part of the sculpture you are looking at. If you look at the skin of the humans, you can see a more smooth texture whereas on the hair of the humans, there is a more rough texture. The wings and clothing have a smooth texture but there are also folds that create a little bit off more bumpy texture.Line Is also an important element of this sculpture. There are plenty of lines that are used to form shaped and draw your eyes from one end of the sculpture to the other. For example, the lines of the wings draw your eyes down to the humans faces as they look Like they are about to kiss. Also, the arms of the woman as she lifts her hands onto the mans head draw your eyes upwards to the two humans as they kiss. It Is very clear that these lines are meant to draw attention to the humans faces. This sculpture Is fairly dense and has a great amount of mass. It Is made of marble, which Is very heavy. There arent any holes or gaps between the sculpture besides for the small spaces between the womans legs and between the womans back and the mans Hess. Lastly, the forms of this sculpture are the three-dimensional humans. The two humans create an Image of Cupids KISS while lying down which makes this sculpture look more sexual. The draping clothes on the woman also create form by extending along the womans legs. Mostly an off-white color (or beige). There are only two human figures as well as a set there are also folds that create a little bit of a more bumpy texture. Line is also an portent element of this sculpture. Art Gallery free essay sample In completion of this assignment the art gallery that I chose to visit was Mark Gallery in Englewood New Jersey. When you walk up to the establishment there are floor to ceiling glass windows that allow you to see everything inside. Facing the gallery there were so many colors that enticed you to enter. The arrangements and art work was spaced out nicely not causing clutter. This allowed you to individually take in each piece on by itself. All of the pieces were very nice but the artist that caught my attention was Mr. Mark Oberndorf. Oberndorf was born in New York but is currently residing in Bergren County New Jersey. He is a contemporary realist painter. Since the age of 10 he has been interested in the visual arts. At an early age some of his beginning works were illustrating his school yearbook to painting murals on his elementary school building. Currently his work is currently represented by Mark Gallery of Englewood New Jersey and Westwood Gallery in Westwood New Jersey. I found several of his pieces interesting because they were so basic. Not meaning they did not have levels or dimensions but they put me in the mind of simpler times and relatable memories. His pieces display three dimensional effects on a two dimensional surface with natural lighting effects. All painting are created with oil on linen canvass. Such pieces as the â€Å"Wyckoff Train Station†, â€Å"Dairy Queen† and â€Å"Gas† all represent the Bergren County area and parts of New York prior to the gentrification phase. â€Å"Gas† depicts an old two pump station as you would see it in the 1970’s. The piece of the â€Å"Dairy Queen† shows the classic franchise that was shaped somewhat of a barn prior to the new modernized look you may see today. I can remember as a kid having one of these in our neighborhood. We frequently visited it for a Sunday cone after attending church. I could not wait to stand in line for my soft serve on a cone. Lastly the â€Å"Wyckoff Train Station† is truly a classic single standing building not so big on the side of the tracks. Much dated compared to the enormous train stations and subway stations you see in the big cities such as New York. Through viewing these pieces I would think this is his way of holding on to a piece of history, before all common landmarks that held tradition and memories were torn down. Prior to gentrification in many of our communities there were several sites or establishments that were a common thread to our community. Be it the mom and pop store on the corner to the old fashioned ice cream stand. Gentrification has erased these things with more modernized establishments that help to bring economic wealth for some but forces others out of the neighborhoods and communities that they have been a part of for quite some time.
